Native – Green Cane Project

NATIVE
GREEN CANE PROJECT

At the heart of our sweetness is a partnership with Native®, a Brazilian pioneer that fundamentally changed how the world thinks about sugar production. For decades, the industry standard for harvesting sugarcane involved setting fields on fire to burn away razor-sharp leaves and deter snakes, a practice that released massive amounts of carbon and destroyed soil health. In 1987, Native launched the Green Cane Project, a visionary initiative that replaced fire with “Green Harvesting.” They developed specialized mechanical harvesters that cut the cane “green” and simultaneously shred the leafy by-products, returning them to the earth as a nutrient-rich mulch. This “straw” layer acts as a natural blanket, protecting the soil from erosion, suppressing weeds without chemicals, and drastically increasing water retention—all while sequestering carbon instead of emitting it.

The impact of this revolution extends far beyond the harvest itself. By mimicking a natural, regenerative ecosystem, Native’s farms have become thriving biodiversity hotspots; a study identified over 340 species of mammals, birds, and reptiles on their land, including endangered species that have found a safe haven in the unburned fields. Their mills are entirely energy self-sufficient, powered by bagasse (the fibrous remains of the cane) to generate steam and electricity, often feeding enough surplus green energy back into the public grid to power the nearby city of over 500,000 people. For Clear Water Cocoa Company, using Native® sugar means our chocolate is supported by a system that yields 20% higher productivity than conventional farming while actively restoring the planet. It is a commitment to quality that ensures our sweetness never comes at the cost of the environment.
